A physician associate is a new health care professional who works alongside the doctors and the wider medical team. They can take a medical history and address healthcare needs, carry out physical and mental examinations, order investigations and review results diagnose and manage illness and make onward referrals to secondary care. There is always a doctor on call if further advice is needed. Currently a physician associate cannot prescribe but as the doctor is always on call they are available to proscribe any medication that is required after a consultation.
